What's the problem in anatomy education?

Anatomy is fact heavy and requires a lot of memorization, but it’s also important for students to apply their knowledge. Typically, anatomy students struggle to connect isolated facts and apply them in novel contexts. For example, it may be simple to memorize that the bicep muscle contracts to flex the forearm, but it’s more difficult to understand a bicep strain explains why someone can’t flex their forearm. Currently, there is a need for a learning resource that fosters understanding of structure function relationships in context of real-life scenarios.

 

What's our solution? 

1.  Use a problem-based learning approach to make the learning experience engaging and to increase retention. 

2.  Create an accessible and sustainable desktop application that guides students through case studies on the lower limb at increasing levels of difficulty.

 

What are our roles?  

Although everyone is involved in all aspects of the project, we all have lead roles for the sake of project management.

 

I am the lead illustrator. I oversee all the visual assets making sure they are cohesive and follow the fun graphic approach we have. I make most of the backgrounds, character designs and 3D models. I use a combination of 2D and 3D tools to make the illustrations as accurate as I can. I also support Nati in creating the animations for the case studies. 

 

Nati is our Lead Animator. She storyboards and animates the case studies. She draws the boards, makes the animatics and organizes the sound design. Chelsea is our Lead Designer responsible for the application's UI design, developing design documentation to be shared with programmers, as well as coding some of the application's front-end programming.

I used a combination of 3D maquettes, references, and storyboard overlays to gain a better understanding of perspective and space.

We made sure the design was minimal to minimize distractions and maximize learning.
